These days, many articles are dedicated to the burning of the Balkan in Trieste on July 13, 1920, but rarely is there any reference to the killing of Tommaso Gulli, commander of the Royal Ship Puglia and Gold Medal for Military Valor, and the engineer Aldo Rossi, Silver Medal for Military Valor, in Split on the evening of the previous July 11. The arrival of this news in the Julian capital, where the Austro-Hungarian divide-and-rule policies , developed by the authorities in Vienna in the final decades of the Habsburg monarchy, had exacerbated opposing nationalisms, had triggered a series of demonstrations that culminated in the shooting that took place on the Balkan.
