Love for the homeland: Dalmatia is your name

by Lucio Toth The love for one's native land is so strong that over the years it discovers roots so deep in our Self and in our memory that it overcomes the barriers of time. It is our land, however and always. And forever. Whoever lives there today. The Armenian refugees, the Greek, German, Russian refugees or any other place the twentieth century has devastated know it, with the primitive and unconscious violence of modernity or with that desired and pursued by political elites convinced they represent the common good of their peoples. Because the love for the land where one was born, or lived in the early years, like every love, includes everything, forgives everything. Even those who...

Italian culture seen from the rest of the world: debate in Pescara

In the name of Flaiano meetings and prize The exceptions make you think. Pescara, with more than 123.000 inhabitants, is the most populous city in Abruzzo, as well as the provincial capital. It is located on the Adriatic, at the mouth of the river of the same name, nestled between the hills and the sea, less than an hour away from the highest peaks of the Apennines. It does not have a historic center, no use looking for one. Destroyed during the Second World War, plundered when the Germans retreated, it was rebuilt according to precise lines, modern, with reference to the sea, the river of the same name and the railway that together draw regular figures when they do not force you to stop and change route. This is why Pescara...

Mittelfest: Fornasaro's Twentieth Century in the New Europe

Twentieth-century Adriatic Europe, proclaimed by politics and economics, was hope, a dream, destined for a few privileged, enlightened people who had been able to look ahead. Today, with the enlargement of the European Union to Croatia, which becomes its twenty-eighth member, a page of history with many comfortable and uncomfortable protagonists is closed, but fortunately, that driving force that made all this possible has not subsided. A particular point of view, in observing what was happening, was certainly had by the writers who, thanks to a particular sensitivity and the ability to hypothesize the future, described possible scenarios but in...

ANVGD-Istria: a project for Europe

ANVGD-Istria: a project for Europe Croatia's entry into the EU on July 2013, 28 opens up new scenarios in our border world. Some episodes mark these days of swings between celebration and the predictions of visionaries who reflect on possible disasters. The glass half full or half empty? It doesn't matter because things, in any case, evolve beyond our expectations, they simply happen. We have followed and reported two distinct moments in recent days, which, however, when put in relation, give a sign of the times and deserve to be commented together. The first was the awarding of the Fulvio Tomizza Prize to Ivan Nino Jakovcic on June XNUMX in Trieste...
Mary Pasquinelli

Maria Pasquinelli passed away in Bergamo

Maria Pasquinelli passed away yesterday afternoon in Bergamo. She had turned one hundred in March. A schoolteacher, she tied her life to a tragic episode in Julian-Dalmatian history. On February 10, 1947, she shot General de Winton, head of the Pola garrison, to protest the decision of the great powers to cede Istria to Tito's Yugoslavia. Tried and sentenced to death by the Allied Military Government tribunal in Trieste, she had her sentence commuted to life imprisonment. After 18 years in prison, she was granted clemency, which she accepted in order to be able to care for her sister. She carried her dead body on her shoulders - she declared - she had never asked...
