The medals of Geppino Micheletti, the hero of Vergarolla

Geppino Micheletti, the doctor who would become the hero of Vergarolla on August 18, 1946, was born in Trieste on July 18, 1905, for his determination and professionalism in caring for the wounded in the attack that had caused carnage on the Polesine beach where entire families were watching the Scarioni Cup swimming competitions. Over 100 people died, including at least 30 children, including the surgeon's two sons. On that blood-stained beach, he also lost his brother and sister-in-law. Despite knowing this, he continued to operate and save lives. His heroism, exemplified by the "Dr. Geppino Micheletti" Award, recently held...

Two batanas launched in Cittanova

Novigrad's Mandracchio harbor hosted the official launch of two Istrian batanas, an event marking one of the final stages of the European "TOFOLA" project and revitalizing the role of this ancient vessel as a symbol of local maritime heritage, an educational tool, and a new resource for sustainable tourism. The ceremony was attended by Novigrad's mayor and Member of Parliament, Anteo Milos; Boris Sabatti, director of the Istrian Development Agency (IDA); Luciano Beg of the Marservis company; the project's Croatian and Italian partners; as well as Novigrad's fishermen and Slobodan Simić Simo, designer of Novigrad's historic batana, which today...
Hotel Balkan Fire, July 13, 1920

The “verbalized history” of the Balkan fire

We thank Viviana Facchinetti, journalist and author of "...why the Fire Brigade is always there. Trieste and its Firefighters through centuries of history, news, and real life" (Associazione Italiani di Pola e dell'Istria - LCPE Odv, Trieste 2025), for allowing us to publish excerpts from her book regarding the fire at the Hotel Balkan, which occurred on July 13, 1920, at the end of a day of clashes between Italian and Slavic nationalists in Trieste. The riots were sparked by the news that on the night of July 11-12, a Croatian demonstration in Split had targeted the Italian community, requiring the intervention of the sailors of the Royal Navy...

Second edition of the "Dr. Geppino Micheletti Award"

Go beyond the Hippocratic Oath. Commitment beyond one's contractual and institutional duties. Follow a calling and not simply practice a profession. Doctors, surgeons, and healthcare workers don't always receive sufficient respect and appreciation for the work they do. Incidents of medical malpractice and poor service easily grab headlines and fuel discussions on social media, but in doing so, they overshadow not only those who work within healthcare institutions to ensure everything runs smoothly, but also those who voluntarily dedicate extra effort, even at the expense of their own health and...
