Istria Raises the Curtain. Theatrical Stories of the Exodus [presentation]

There are stories that have remained silent for years, locked away in suitcases, memories, and absences. Stories of lands abandoned, of homes quickly emptied, of voices that crossed the sea, carrying with them pain, identity, and memory. The theater becomes the space where these voices are heard again. Through narrative theater, Tiziana Sauco, a second-generation Istrian exile, with her book Istria Raises the Curtain. Theatrical Stories of the Exodus (Eclettica, Massa 2026) takes the reader on a profound journey into the history of the Istrian, Rijeka, and Dalmatian exodus. The Pula Arena Online Archive

The archive of the "L'Arena di Pola" is back online.

The birth of the Pula Arena on July 29, 1945, in Pula marked a defining moment in the history of the city of Pula, Istria, and its Italian-speaking population. Its publications were marked by expectations and hopes that later turned into bitter disappointments; by the harsh confrontation with a reality that grew more dramatic day by day, culminating in the tragedy of the Vergarolla massacre (August 18, 1946), then the exodus (February-March 1947), and finally the definitive transfer of our beloved city to Yugoslav administration (September 16, 1947); and, more generally, by the transfer of hundreds of thousands of Julian, Istrian,...

The medals of Geppino Micheletti, the hero of Vergarolla

Geppino Micheletti, the doctor who would become the hero of Vergarolla on August 18, 1946, was born in Trieste on July 18, 1905, for his determination and professionalism in caring for the wounded in the attack that had caused carnage on the Polesine beach where entire families were watching the Scarioni Cup swimming competitions. Over 100 people died, including at least 30 children, including the surgeon's two sons. On that blood-stained beach, he also lost his brother and sister-in-law.
