The Vergarolla massacre: witnesses tell their story

Tuesday, August 18, 2026, marked the 80th anniversary of the Vergarolla massacre, which occurred on the beach in Polesano on Sunday, August 18, 1946. The beach was packed with families and participants in the Coppa Scarioni races, the Istrian leg of which had been organized by the Pietas Julia sailing club, a long-standing patriot, which would later celebrate its 60th anniversary that evening. It was the first massacre in the history of the Italian Republic, as well as the one with the highest number of victims: 64 were identified (a third of them children), but nearly 50 more bodies were unidentified, so badly damaged had they been by the explosion of the warehouse...

Commemoration of the 110th anniversary of the death of Nazario Sauro

I die with the sole regret of depriving my dearest and most kind children of their beloved father, but you still have the Fatherland, which will take my place. Only a few days remain before the Kingdom of Italy declares war on the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and the irredentist Nazario Sauro, born in Koper on September 20, 1880, who took refuge in Venice when the First World War broke out to avoid having to fight in the Habsburg army, has given his journalist friend Silvio Stringari a letter addressed to his firstborn...

The significance and historical context of a disaster must be understood and studied to foster, by transmitting its memory to younger generations, a new era of dialogue, understanding, and coexistence in this area. Speakers included: Ezio Giuricin, president of the Circolo...
