The 2023 Trieste Remembrance Race was held in Basovizza
The sixth edition of the Trieste Remembrance Race was a resounding success. The severe weather that has raged across Friuli Venezia Giulia over the past few days spared the more than 200 participants , who still decided to run the challenging 10km and 5km courses of the traditional route set up by the organizers around the Basovizza foiba . An unexpected sunny day provided the backdrop for the final stage of the event, which this year touched Rome, Milan, Catania, Novara, and San Felice Circeo, while other cities, Verona first and foremost, are expected to join the list in 2024.
Tobia Beltrame of Trieste Atletica was the first to cross the finish line , running the 10km circuit around the Basovizza Foiba in 31:34 . The regional 10km champion thus repeated last year's success and added two other Trieste Atletica athletes to the podium: Samuele Della Pietra finished second with a time of 32:34, and Thomas Oliver Doney third.
First among the women was Veronica Molaro of Atletica Buja ( 42'00'' ), followed by Francesca Patat of Libertas Udine (42'32”) and Sara Druscovich of Trieste Atletica (43'51”). Many women were present at the start of the race. As in Rome, Milan, Catania, San Felice Circeo and Novara, the Corsa del Ricordo For Woman was held in Trieste , a race within a race, reserved for women that highlights the fight against gender violence. The event, made possible thanks also to the contribution of the Department of Sport, was dedicated to Norma Cossetto, and all participants in the Family race wore a special pink T-shirt.
The event, conceived and promoted by ASI , and organized in collaboration with the National Association of Venezia Giulia and Dalmatia , was curated in the Trieste edition by the " Trieste Corre " committee in collaboration with the National League , the Friuli Venezia Giulia Regional Committee ASI with the patronage of the Autonomous Region of Friuli Venezia Giulia and the Municipality of Trieste . The Corsa del Ricordo, born in 2014 in Rome, saw its first edition held in Trieste in 2017.
STATEMENTS
"Trieste, like every year, responded resoundingly to the call of this event," said Organizing Committee President Roberto Cipolletti, "because the dramatic events surrounding the Foibe tragedy and the exodus of so many Italians from their homes are still deeply felt in this city. The race has also grown in technical terms over the years, with many athletes taking part, and at a truly high level."
"The weather has been kind to us," said Alessandro Piemonte of the Trieste Corre Committee, who oversaw the technical organization, "and this year we were able to complete this race, which commemorates the tragic historical events of the post-World War II period that involved the border regions of Venezia Giulia and Dalmatia. Current events remind us how the issue of exodus has once again become a pressing topic, in the hope that no one will ever again be forced to abandon their homes and belongings due to third-party impositions."
ANVGD President Renzo Codarin noted that "every year, requests from other Italian cities to join the Corsa del Ricordo circuit increase. In this regard, we are working to request the patronage of the Prime Minister's Office for future editions."
Also present were the President of Asi Atletica Sandro Giorgi , the national Asi manager Gilberto Paris Lippi , the Councilors of the Municipality of Trieste, Caterina de Gavardo for security policies, Elisa Lodi for public works and major projects, Maurizio de Blasio for Education and Family Policies.
