Abolish titles and honorifics to Tito
Veneto is leading the way in removing Josip Broz Tito's name from toponymy and revoking all state honors . A state bill was approved Wednesday by the Regional Council's First Committee and will now go to the floor for final approval.
The first signatory of the bill, approved by a majority vote, is Alberto Villanova, president of the Lega-Liga Veneta Intergroup . The proposal calls for amending Law 1188/1927 "Road names and monuments to contemporary figures" and Law 178/1951 "Establishment of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic and regulation of the awarding and use of honors." The aim is to "prohibit the dedication of streets, public squares, and monuments, and to allow the revocation of state honors, from those found responsible for atrocious actions, war crimes, and crimes against humanity," referring specifically to the former Yugoslavian leader Tito.
In the Council, Villanova himself will be the rapporteur, and the co-rapporteur will be the vice-president of the Commission, Vanessa Camani , of the Democratic Party.
Tito was president of Yugoslavia from 1953 to 1980. From 1939, he was the general secretary of the Yugoslav Communist Party, leading the liberation struggle from the Nazi invaders and against the Croatian and Italian fascists. He is accused of political responsibility for the anti-Italian repression of Fiume, Istria, Dalmatia, carried out with physical elimination in the foibe and with expulsions.
