Fertilia Column Exiles

Reception, resilience and rebirth of the exiles in Fertilia

On September 20, 21 and 22, under the guidance of the associations that accepted the invitation of the Municipality of Alghero to manage and organize the event “Fertilia Città di Fondazione”, the CCN Fertilia città di Fondazione, together with the territorial associations, including the Fertilia-Arenosu Neighborhood Committee, the Egea Association – Una Luce sulla Memoria, the EGIS, the Provincial Committee of Sassari – Fertilia of the National Association of Venezia Giulia and Dalmatia and the Committee of the Celebrations of San Marco, and thanks to the valuable funding of the Region of Sardinia, the Municipality of Alghero, the national ANVGD and the Multimedia Documentation Center of Julian, Istrian, Fiumana and Dalmatian Culture and the contribution of the Municipality of Ferrara, Fertilia will be the protagonist of numerous events, conferences, debates, books of true stories, comparisons between cultures and regions. Important moments of growth, sharing, and comparison between institutions, in which there will be communities of exiles around the world, representatives of institutions and places that have filled the history books and that have experienced this terrible exodus. A moment that the community will not easily forget will be marked by the awarding of honorary citizenship of Alghero to Mrs. Egea Haffner, the protagonist of the photograph “The little girl with the suitcase”, an icon of the exodus of the people of Fiume, Istria and Dalmatia.

But there will also be space for numerous surprises on the stage that will be set up in front of Piazza San Marco, such as the screening of the film, shown in national preview on 21 September at 21 pm, fresh from the spotlight of the Venice Film Festival, Course 230° – Return to the Land of the Fathers.

The event will leave space on the final day, to one of the most engaging projects dedicated to young people with the presentation of an augmented reality video game "Memory Department Fertilia Files". Among the projects financed and which constitute the great wealth of this event it is important to remember the opening meeting “Fertilia suspended between history and future”  which sees prominent guests from the field of design, in collaboration with the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Sassari and who will present a historical anthropological investigation, a study on the building heritage and the research of the role of Fertilia in the territory, with a careful investigation of the territorial and social transformations that have occurred over time, a perspective towards the future development of the City of Foundation and the development of resources available to all that allow the regeneration of the community. Among these, it is essential that the Egean Ecomuseum becomes a dynamic tool oriented not only to the protection of memory and all the identities that make up the community of Fertilia, but that it goes from being exclusively "a lighthouse on memory" to being a privileged observation point from which to "scan the horizon" and plan a shared future.

Finally, the digitalization projects related to the City of Foundation will be presented, including: the digital platform that collects the archive documentation on Fertilia https://bora.fertilia.org, a substantial work of digitalization of historical documents and deeds and a virtual visit of Fertilia and its territory with multimedia inserts that represent its history: https://zent.fertilia.org. All digitization projects are accessible from the platform https://fertilia.org, which aims to represent the community's virtual bulletin board.

Mauro Manca, President of the Provincial Committee of Sassari-Fertilia of the National Association of Venezia Giulia and Dalmatia, also spoke at the press conference to present the event, held at the Municipality of Alghero on Friday 13 September.
