The well-known historian from Trieste Giulio Cervani defined the clash between Julian and Croatian historians, which characterized the second half of the nineteenth century, as a "race for the priority of origins". The study of history, in fact, became one of the tools characterizing the political-national struggle in the period of Irredentism. It was a question of identifying, thanks to historical and archaeological sources, who had first occupied the territory of Venezia Giulia: the Romans, considered the ancestors of the Italians, or the Illyrians, therefore the Slavs? Did the "priority of origins" belong to one or the other? In reality, it is possible to trace similar reflections and investigations already in the first half of the nineteenth century. Hence the need to trace the origins of Irredentism, the purpose of this publication. The focus is on the biographies and writings of some of the protagonists from Trieste and Istria in the struggle to prove that Venezia Giulia belonged to Italy: Antonio Madonizza, Giovanni Orlandini, Carlo de Franceschi, Carlo Combi, Tomaso Luciani and Giuseppina Martinuzzi. The work is complemented by the publication of important documents from the period, some of which are unpublished, and by a review of the archive and bibliographic sources on the authors studied in this book, with an in-depth analysis of the birth and family of Giovanni Orlandini, a prominent figure in nineteenth-century Trieste who has still been little studied.

Pamela German She holds a master's degree in Philology and History of Antiquity (University of Pisa) with a thesis entitled “The food system in the Roman Empire: practice and ideology”. In addition to her work in ancient history, she conducts research in the field of nineteenth-century Trieste. Particularly noteworthy are her scientific essays on the Egyptologist Joseph Passalacqua (Trieste 1797, Berlin 1865).
