Tabula Quinta Deuropa

TABVULA QVINTA DEVROPA goes with the versified remake of Ptolemy’s Geography made by the Florentine geographer Francesco Berlinghieri.
In the work there is no hint about the date, but, after the careful and meticulous studies made by the Italian scholar Roberto Almagià, we know that the document came certainly to light in 1482.
The replication is taken from a precious copy owned by Scaramangà Foundation based in Trieste.
It’s an engraving print on a metal plate, (dimensions 29,5 cm x 48,5 cm) it is framed by two black lines that compose the border graduated 1° by 1°. The illustration is split in the middle, from the top to the bottom, by a strip left in white and bounded by two lines.
It is bounded between the 41° N and 48° N, and between the 30°E and the 47° and it has the grid of meridians and parallels.
On the left side, outside the board, there are the notes related to Ptolemy’s climates, there isn’t any hint to the scale; orientation is the usual one.
This document shows one of the so-called old tables depicts Rhaetia, Vindelicia, Noricum, Pannonia, Illiricum and some parts of the regions in the nearby, Italy among them, which is outlined only in its contours.
It is a full incorrect and shapeless picture, either from the astronomical point of view or for the illustration.
The existence of the Istrian peninsula can be deduced only for the presence of some toponyms.
The names ALVONA (Albona), PHLAVONA (Fianona) and TARSATICA (Trsat) are readable, they are placed along the coastline, utterly unreal, of the region named IAPYDRE, instead of Iapygia, that ends at the ENEO F (river Eneo or Rècina).
A big island, APSORRO ISOLA, faces a deep bay in the coast and it  is used to indicate Cres and Lošinj islands. The names of the centres CREPSA and APSORRO are written. More to the East appears Krk island (CURITA ISOLA).
For the other part of the Adriatic Archipelago the coastal and insular characteristics continued regular, even if in ILLYRIDE E LIBVRNIA and in DALMATIA, the number of toponyms used is very significant and enough precise.
The orographic development defines these region with a kind of brown rope, that, from the central part of the Alps reaches the PAR DI MACEDONIA.
The fluvial grid is represented by dark blue lines and the course of DANVBIO FI (Danube) takes relevance for the graphic symbol.
The most important settlements are indicated with a red circle as well as the corresponding toponym.
