20th edition of the Cinema Isola festival
Twenty years, an important birthday for Kino Otok – Isola Cinema. It is twenty years of commitment “in the diffusion of cinematographic culture, of cinema as an extraordinary means of expression and communication”, the organizers note a little over a month before the new appointment with the festival, a stage for screenings, meetings, and insights for a transversal audience, which unites generations. To celebrate the anniversary, from June 5 to 9, some of the protagonists of past editions will return to Isola with their new films. An auteur cinema that has gained international recognition represented by directors such as the Filipino master Lav Diaz (Golden Lion in Venice in 2016), the Argentine Lisandro Alonso, or the Swiss-Canadian Peter Mettler, winner of the Darko Bratina Award. Homage to a Vision 2018, awarded to him by the Kinoatelje of Gorizia for the uniqueness of his poetics and for his exceptional opus in the field of independent cinema, which for over three decades has eluded any definition of documentary or fiction genre.
But the festival has always been a meeting place for film professionals and operators, with a program that this year will focus on found footage, or the creative reuse of images. For the occasion, Alina Marazzi, artistic director of the Roman festival UnArchive, will be a guest at Isola, the first Italian event entirely dedicated to this practice, which catalyzes the expressive research of filmmakers but also video artists and performers, in a contamination of languages capable of giving life to surprising filmic forms.
Another return to this segment of Kino Otok – Isola Cinema will be that of the American filmmaker Bill Morrison, with a program of shorts and a masterclass. His latest film, “Incident”, will also be presented, a documentary that reconstructs, through images from surveillance cameras and those carried by police officers, the death of the African-American Harith Augustus, which occurred in Chicago in 2018.
