FederEsuli after Mattarella and Pahor's visit to the Foiba

Numerous interventions and agencies published and received after the press conference held today, Tuesday 28 July 2020, at 11:00 at the Nassirya Hall of the Senate of the Republic, promoted by the Federation of Associations of Istrian, Fiuman and Dalmatian Exiles having as its theme the reflections that arose following the visit of President Mattarella and the President of the Republic of Slovenia Pahor to the Basovizza Foiba. Rewatch the press conference on RadioRadicale.it

(ANSA) – ROME, JULY 28 – Foibe: Gasparri appeal, Conte receives exile associations Organizations. After the Pahor visit, move forward on the protection of rights. "Forza Italia fully shares the requests made by the associations of exiles and asks that Conte receive these organizations that represent a piece of Italian history that is too often forgotten". This is what Maurizio Gasparri (FI) said, speaking at a press conference in the presence of the leaders of the Associations of Istrian, Fiuman and Dalmatian Exiles called to take stock following the visit of Presidents Mattarella and Pahor to the Basovizza Foiba. Present at the Senate were the President of FederEsuli Antonio Ballarin, the President of the Association of Fiumani Italiani nel mondo Franco Papetti, the President of the Association of Italians of Pola and Istria Tito Sidari and the President of Coordinamento Adriatico Giuseppe de Vergottini. All of them recognized that that day had a historic, very positive character. However, they are convinced that that handshake, which opened all the Italian newspapers, is a starting point, and not a finishing point, to relaunch the historical truth and the recognition of the rights of those who suffered those enormous tragedies. "Seeing the two Presidents holding hands was nice but now – asks Antonio Ballarin – we have to settle the accounts and there are many. There is a roundtable at the Presidency of the Council that met for the last time under the direction of Maria Elena Boschi. Now – he adds – we ask for fairness. We are tired of being considered children of a lesser God, we come from years of total oblivion: now we ask for our rights to be recognized after 75 years. Unfortunately – Ballarin laments – every time the government changes we always start from scratch. We ask for fair compensation: it is not a question of money but of principle. So with the money that is left over, a Foundation for the protection of the Julian-Dalmatian Adriatic culture should be created. Furthermore, we should have a senator for life who represents our world and who can protect our history“. Full solidarity and support also from the Lega senator Raffaella Fiormaria Marin: “Unfortunately there is still much to be done to recognize history: recently another foiba was discovered, on the border between Croatia and Slovenia, where 814 people were killed, including nuns and children. Nobody talks about it, which is why I believe that the history books should be rewritten after 75 years of silence. I am proud – concluded Marin – to be from Grado and Giulia and to represent my land here in the Senate”.

This is what Forza Italia Senator Maurizio Gasparri said. promoter in the Senate of a press conference entitled 'Reflection and requests following the historic visit to the Basovizza foiba'. A meeting wanted by Gasparri after the last visit of the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella to Slovenia, to bring the requests of the Julian Dalmatian exiles to the government. Witness of a story that has been going on for 75 years, Antonio Ballarin, president of the Federation of Associations of Istrian, Fiumani and Dalmatian Exiles (FederEsuli), who thanked the Head of State Mattarella "for the interest and sensitivity shown on the issue". "During the previous government – Ballarin underlines – we had some meetings with the then Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Enzo Moavero Milanesi, who was very helpful, but then the government changed and every time we have to start from scratch.“. Among the concrete actions for the world of the Julian-Dalmatian exodus, we ask in particular for the immediate restitution of 179 assets left freely available to the Italian exiles, already owners, as foreseen by the 1983 agreements; multilingual plaques in Slovenian territory at the places of the martyrdom of Italians; compensation for exiled Italians and creation, with adequate means, of a Foundation of Italian exiles, following up on decisions contained in treaties”. – “We want there to be a sense of fairness,” said Ballarin, who was born in a refugee settlement, “because there has not been adequate compensation for denied rights and roots.“. In the end, Gasparri is keen to highlight another issue. That of the honor, which he brands as a “shame”, given in Trieste last July 13 to the writer Boris Pahor, Knight of the Grand Cross of the Italian Republic. “It should be taken away from him, without hesitation – concludes the Forza Italia senator – because he had the courage to say that the FOIBE are a lie. Thousands of Italians were killed in the FOIBE, who should also be remembered and honored by Boris Pahor. The writer cannot take an honor by being a denier. He is 107 years old but his advanced age does not allow him to say stupid things”.
