“River or Death!” awarded as best European documentary
Igor Bezinović's documentary "River or Death!" has won one of the most important awards of the year in European cinema. At the 2026 European Film Awards ceremony—the 38th edition of the European Film Academy awards—held this evening, Saturday, January 17, in Berlin, the film was named Best European Documentary, confirming the European film community's appreciation for an ambitious and original project.
Directed by Bezinović and produced by Vanja Jambrović and Tibor Keser for the production company Restart, the film is a co-production between Croatia, Italy, and Slovenia that explores the sixteen-month occupation of Rijeka in 1919 led by the Italian poet and soldier Gabriele D'Annunzio, a controversial but central episode in the history of the post-World War I period.
