Fulvio Tomizza, the writer's world in a documentary

Produced by Cizerouno of Trieste, it is the result of an educational project on history and literature carried out with the support of the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region and was recently presented at the Department of Italian Studies of the University of Littoral, in collaboration with Tv Capodistria

Students from a high school in Trieste – the ITIS Deledda-Fabiani – are the protagonists of a project designed to help young people discover the world of Fulvio Tomizza, his thoughts, his books, in which he became a keen interpreter of a spirit of peaceful coexistence between people, which is more relevant than ever today. A series of lessons and workshops, led by Martina Vocci, journalist and author of Tv Capodistria, to delve into the story of the writer from Matterada and the historical events he narrated, linked to the dramatic post-war period in Istria and the exodus; and then interviews with authors and cultural figures, and meetings with the director Massimiliano Milič, the director of photography Fulvio Bullo, the video artist Francesca Bergamasco. An experience recounted in the documentary “Le storie in movimento: Fulvio Tomizza ei contemporanei”, created thanks to a call for proposals from the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region by the Cizerouno cultural association of Trieste and directed by Martina Vocci herself.

"For me – explains the director – working with the kids at this technical-professional school was a great discovery. We tried – together and in a very democratic way – to discover the writer’s themes. We talked about exile, diversity, peaceful coexistence in this territory that has so many cultures within it. The wonderful thing was discovering all these stories with the kids, through research on Tomizza’s life and production, and the most interesting part was for each of us to be able to recognize ourselves. In the class there are two girls who have had experiences very similar to those lived by the writer. I think this is the main goal: to bring these experiences closer to our history, and to feel how each of us is part of this mosaic of stories that represent these lands”.

As for the presentation of the documentary in Koper, it is part of the special attention that Professor Nives Zudič Antonič, lecturer at the Department of Italian Studies at the University, has decided to dedicate this year in her courses to Fulvio Tomizza, “writer that today's youth – says the teacher – know little. Hence the importance of studying their work and especially their message in depth”.
