Ziberna: “A day that corresponds to the true liberation of Gorizia”

Gorizia remembers the day in 1945 when the occupation of the city by Tito's troops ended. June 12th is therefore included in the list of dates that the Municipality of Gorizia intends to enhance because it is among the most significant in the contemporary history of the city.

This is established by a resolution approved today by the municipal council, which thus extends the list of commemorations that draw on local history, including those of 27 March 1946 (for the demonstrations aimed at affirming the Italian identity of Gorizia) and 3 May 1945 (in memory of the deportations and killings perpetrated during the 40 days of Yugoslav occupation), as well as 19 July 1915 (Battle of Podgora), 8 August 1916 (capture of Gorizia) and, returning to the second conflict, 16 September 1947 (definitive assignment of Gorizia to Italy).

"In addition to the anniversaries that Gorizia shares with the rest of the country - explained Mayor Rodolfo Ziberna - such as November 4 and April 25, there are some particularly significant dates in contemporary history for our city that we believe it is right to remember. To the list of these anniversaries we have added the date of June 12, 1945, a day that corresponds to the true liberation of Gorizia. While the rest of Italy, in fact, had already freed itself from the yoke of totalitarian dictatorships, Gorizia would soon be occupied by the troops of Marshal Tito's partisans, who, as is well known, intended to occupy the Venezia Giulia, Gorizia and Trieste in particular, to arrive at the winners' table with this important spoils of war. As we know, for more than forty days, after the war ended, Gorizia suffered the deportation of over 650 Gorizians who had the only “fault” of being able to represent an obstacle to the realization of Marshal Tito's annexationist ambitions”.

The celebration of the day, scheduled for Friday, June 12, includes a solemn moment at 9.00:1945 am at the Parco della Rimembranza in Corso Italia. The mayor of Gorizia, Rodolfo Ziberna, and the prefect Massimo Marchesiello, representing all the authorities, will lay a floral tribute at the foot of the lapidary that commemorates the deportations that took place after the war in XNUMX.

In addition, three posters commemorating the date of June 12 will be displayed in dedicated spaces on Via Filzi, Via Duca d'Aosta and Via Cadorna.
