THANKS TO THE POER CIRCLES FOR THE LOTS OF NEWS!

Here we are at the spring issue of our online newspaper, with lots of news, despite the rather short time that has passed since the special issue for Remembrance Day was released, and this once again thanks to the collaboration of all of you who have sent us news and photographs from all over the world!

There are two themes that recur in this issue, intertwining with each other: anniversaries and ships. For example, the steamship “La Sofia” that brought the first Italian emigrants from the port of Genoa to that of Vitoria, in Brazil, a good 150 years ago, that is, back in 1874! An anniversary celebrated in grand style by the local authorities as well as by the Italian diplomatic and consular authorities in Brazil: a well-justified pride for our fellow countrymen but also for many Giuliani! And then the symbol of the Italian Navy itself, and not only: the training ship Amerigo Vespucci that is visiting South America and whose stops in Buenos Aires (Argentina), Valparaiso (Chile) and Lima (Peru) we tell you about. But it is also 70 years, this year, since the first departure from Trieste of the steamship “Castel Verde” with the Triestine emigrants and the Istrian, Fiume and Dalmatian exiles to Melbourne in Australia, still today one of the Australian locations where the Julian community is most present and active! And, if the anniversary went a bit unnoticed in Trieste, it will be our circles in Australia, and in particular in Melbourne and Adelaide, who will remember it with photographic exhibitions and events at the beginning of July.

But that's not all: we have agreed with the Regional Council of FVG that, as part of the 2024 edition of the "Day of Fellow Regionals Abroad", the date of which has not yet been set, special attention will be dedicated to this anniversary, which is intertwined with that, also 70 years ago, of the return of Trieste to Italy, but also of the definitive farewell to Zone B, with all the bitterness that this renews in those who lived through those events, first hoped and then had to accept the sad reality, often making painful decisions, such as leaving for other continents.

And finally, still speaking of ships, or rather in this case boats, the release of the book on the retracing of the “Klizia” from Sardinia (Fertilia to be precise) to Pola, to remember the exodus by sea, in decidedly adventurous conditions, of many families and people, such as the commander of the Klizia himself, who returned to Pola for the first time since the exodus.

Of course you will find many other news in this issue of the magazine, and not only that. For example, you will find two testimonial stories by Lucio Iurman and Annamaria Marincovich that we hope will encourage other members of ours to send us memories, testimonies, poems that will then find space in a specific section of our website. And still some memories, engaging if not moving, of those who are no longer with us.

And we certainly do not want to forget that unfortunately in these last days the terrible images and news of the floods in Rio Grande do Sul in Brazil have arrived, and in particular from Porto Alegre, where we had a club that in its best period had reached about seventy members and was certainly active and vital at least until 2009 but probably even after, indeed I take this opportunity to make an appeal: if any Giuliano, of whom we have no news, is in the area, contact us or contact one of our clubs in Brazil: we will do everything possible to help. As you may know, we immediately proposed a solidarity initiative to support the affected populations. I am pleased to underline in this regard that our initiative is part of the activities of UNAIE, which brings together all the Italian associations of compatriots abroad, and on the other it was agreed with the Association of Brazilians in Trieste – ACB Raizes do Brasil – and with the Honorary Consul of Brazil in Trieste, Judith Moura de Oliveira.
