It kicks off Monday 8 June, with a projection at movies Ariston of Viale Romolo Gessi, the review Frontier Cinema, conceived by the Circolo della Cultura e delle Arti as part of the annual Humanistic Dissemination project 2025-26, created with the support of the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region and the contribution of the Casali ETS Foundations, in collaboration with the Casa del Cinema of Trieste.

Three months of screenings – fiction, documentaries, short films, animated films – and book presentations in various locations around the city: In addition to the Ariston, the Miela Theater, the Bobi Bazlen Hall of Palazzo Gopcevich, and the Tommasini Public Garden will be hosting an outdoor evening. Admission to each event is free.

The common thread is the border – physical, historical, identity-related – explored through different cinematographies and perspectives: from European westerns to contemporary documentaries, from historical fiction to animation, passing through the fractures and reconciliations that have marked this corner of Europe.

To open the review, theJune 8th at 18pm at the Ariston, Sara The bell of San Giusto (1954), drama film directed by Mario Amendola and Ruggero Maccari, set in Trieste during the First World War, introduced by the film critic Sergio Germani.

Il June 19th at 20pm again at the Ariston it's up to Do not forget me (2025) of Anja Medved, a poetic documentary about the shared memories of the cross-border area between Gorizia and Nova Gorica, reconstructed through family photographs and childhood memories. The director herself will present the film to the audience.

Il June 23th at 18pm at the Ariston it's the turn of No Man's Land (2001) of Danis Tanovic, Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film: a ferocious satire on the absurdity of the war in the Balkans, presented by Nicoletta Romeo, historical animator of the Alpe Adria Association of Trieste.

Il June 29th at 17.30pm, al Mielagoes on stage Desperado Trail (1965) – also known as Winnetou: The Longest Day of the Redskins – European western based on the novels by Karl May, introduced by Carlo Gaberscek, leading expert on western film sets and locations.

In July and beyond the program continues with other titles: El Shatt (2023) of Ivan Ramljak, a documentary on a forgotten page of the Second World War – the evacuation of Dalmatian refugees to a camp in the Sinai desert – presented by Mila Lazic il 6 July at 17.30 al Miela. Also scheduled The Wire (2021) of Tiha K. Gudac, on the barbed wire erected by Slovenia on the border with Croatia and its consequences on a historically united community; Story of a border (2008), documentary film by Giampaolo Penco, on the events of the Karst area and the Italian-Slovenian border in the twentieth century; Labor (2022) of Alan Ughetto, a poetic stop-motion animated film about the story of Italian emigrants in France at the beginning of the twentieth century.

The cycle closes with a evening dedicated to short films selected by the call “Courts without borders” of the Friuli Venezia Giulia Film Commission, to Tommasini Public Garden, and the presentation of the volume Cinema of the Adriatic Border 1945-2025 di Alessandro Cuk Tuesday, June 16th at 17:00 pm in the hall Bobi Bazlen di Palazzo GopcevichEach screening will be preceded by a presentation.
