Remembrance Day 2023 Municipality of Trieste Press Conference

The Municipality of Trieste presents the initiatives for the Day of Remembrance 2023

On Friday 10 February, at 10.30 am, the commemorative ceremony for the Day of Remembrance 2023 will be held at the Foiba National Monument in Basovizza in the presence of civil, military, religious authorities and representatives of the Committee for the Martyrs of the Foibe and of the Associations and entities that take part and adhere to the program of celebrations. Shortly before, at 9.30:149, a joint laurel wreath will be laid by the FVG Region, the Prefecture and the Municipality of Trieste at Foiba n.XNUMX in Monrupino.

This will be the central moment of the Day of Remembrance which is celebrated on February 10 of each year in memory of the victims of the Foibe, the Istrian, Fiuman, Julian and Dalmatian Exodus and the events of the eastern border. Established in 2004, it represents a moment of reflection and silence on one of the tragedies of the twentieth century. The chosen date is the day in 1947 when the Paris Peace Treaties were signed, which assigned Istria, Kvarner, the city of Zara with its province and most of Venezia Giulia to Yugoslavia, previously part of Italy. The Foiba di Basovizza – National Monument of Trieste represents the most important place of remembrance in Italy on this occasion and, like every year, also in 2023 it will be the venue of the attended and solemn ceremony.

The entire and intense program of celebrations and events promoted by the Municipality of Trieste in collaboration with the Committee for the Martyrs of the Foibe was officially presented today (Monday 6 February) during a press conference, held in the council room of the Municipality of Trieste, which was introduced by the municipal councilor for Culture Giorgio Rossi and which saw the interventions of the president of the ANVGD Renzo Codarin, the president of the National League Paolo Sardos Albertini, the vice president of the Union of Istrians Nelia Verginella, the director of the IRCI Piero Delbello and the curator of the Historical Museums Anna Krekic. Thanking all those who collaborated and made this intense and varied program possible, which in about forty days offers more than 23 events, the councilor for Culture Giorgio Rossi, highlighted the commitment aimed at implementing the educational activity and expressed particular praise for the meritorious activity carried out by the National League, which is taking care of the Monument of the Foiba of Basovizza as a "cathedral". Rossi recalled that this year the Museum of Istrian, Fiumana and Dalmatian Civilization will be open and operational in the spaces of Warehouse 26 in the Old Port of Trieste.

Icalendar of cultural activities organized by the various associations involved are taking place throughout the month of February and until March 10. Going into detail, here are the scheduled events, of which the first two have already taken place.
