Quirinale Mattarella Medif Gdr 2026 1

President Mattarella visited the Exhibition on Dalmatian Exiles from Istria and Fiume at the Vittoriano

On the occasion of the "Day of Remembrance" celebrations, the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, spoke at the ceremony held this morning in the Chamber of Deputies.

The event, hosted by journalist Maria Antonietta Spadorcia, opened with welcoming remarks from the President of the Chamber of Deputies, Lorenzo Fontana, and the President of the Senate, Ignazio La Russa. This was followed by remarks and testimonials from Toni Concina, Honorary President of the Dalmatian Association; historian Gianni Oliva; and Abdon Pamich, Italian Olympic champion.

The celebration concluded with a speech by Vice President of the Council of Ministers Antonio Tajani and the award ceremony for the winning schools of the national competition "The Day of Remembrance," promoted by the Ministry of Education and Merit.

The national anthem and the European anthem were performed by the “Giuseppe Tartini” Conservatory of Trieste, who also performed Antonio Vivaldi's symphony “Al Santo Sepolcro”.

Remembrance Day was established by Law No. 92 of March 30, 2004, to preserve and renew the memory of the tragedy of the Italians and all the victims of the foibe, the exodus of Istrians, Fiume, and Dalmatians from their lands after World War II, and the more complex events of the eastern border.

Also as part of the commemoration of the victims of the Foibe massacres, the Julian-Dalmatian exodus, and the events on the eastern border, President Mattarella visited the "Exhibition of Fiume, Dalmatian, and Istrian Exiles" (MEDIF) at the Vittoriano in Rome this afternoon. The Head of State was welcomed by Renzo Codarin, National President of FederEsuli, Davide Rossi, Vice President of FederEsuli, Giuseppe de Vergottini, Honorary President of FederEsuli, and Edith Gabrielli, Director of the VIVE Institute, who accompanied him on the exhibition tour.
