Aegean Trieste 1

The Egea project unites Sardinia and the eastern border

On the afternoon of Friday 9 October the Mayor of Trieste met a delegation of the association Egea – a light on memory, which is carrying out an important project (www.ecomuseoegea.org) dedicated to the memory of the Julian-Dalmatian exodus in Sardinia and the foibe, named after Egea Haffner, “the little girl with the suitcase” who became one of the iconic images of the Exodus.

The reception at the Town Hall located in Piazza Unità d'Italia followed the one held last spring in Fertilia (Alghero) in honor of Roberto himself diplace. On that occasion the Mayor of Trieste had visited the town symbol of the Istrian, Fiume and Dalmatian Exodus, praising its people's ability to reinvent an existence far from home. And so, on the occasion of the fifty-second Barcolana, the sea was the protagonist of the conversation in the wonderful setting of the Salotto Azzurro of the Municipality. The mayor of Trieste, in the presence of the president of the National Association of Venezia Giulia and Dalmatia Renzo Codarin, reiterated his interest in the eastern border and its people, while on the city's aerial press he showed participants the symbolic places of the disputed memory of the 900th century. For his sensitivity, the members of the Egea association paid homage to him with a limestone stone, as an element of union between Sardinia and Istria; for a moment, land and sea, far and near, touched each other on an October afternoon that has become synonymous with collision routes that cultural associations such as Egea are trying to recompose.
