D Addato Federico The Key Cop

The Key. Foibe, the Edge of Memory

The short novel by Federico D'Addato The Key. Foibe, the Edge of Memory It opens in a tidy two-room apartment, where the life of a man, a Julian-Dalmatian exile now advanced in years, flows between the routine of the workshop and the weight of a memory that has never found peace. The news of Tito's death shakes him. He feels like a man "in debt" to those who have not returned, a survivor who carries in his pocket a rusty key that no longer opens anything, except the memories of a house violently torn apart.Driven by the words of a friend about the need to listen to one's conscience and the need for truth, the protagonist embarks on a physical and spiritual journey towards his homeland. Here, the memories of the terror of the foibe, of the iron wire that bound the wrists and of the forced exodus collide with the reality of a border that has changed language and flag, but not the essence of pain.Through his confrontation with the places of horror and the public recognition of a tragedy too long silenced for political expediency, the nameless man manages to reach unexpected awareness.

The novel is not only a chronicle of pain, but an act of justice towards a generation that was victimized twice: first by violence and then by silence. The "key" ceases to be a dead weight and becomes the tool for re-entering oneself, transforming forgiveness into a way to no longer be devoured by the evil received..
