The May 31st event is part of a rich calendar of events celebrating Fertilia's 90th anniversary, uniting memory, local history, sport, and identity. This initiative will allow us to rediscover an important part of our collective history and strengthen the sense of belonging that represents one of our community's most authentic values., commented the Mayor of Alghero Raimondo Cacciotto.
Fertilia, Maristella, Guardia Grande, and Santa Maria la Palma will be animated for a day by cycling enthusiasts who will participate in a "non-competitive ride" designed to symbolically trace the perimeter of the vast reclamation project that in the 1930s literally transformed what was once a vast marshy and stony area into a fertile and productive place.
“The bicycle was the only means of transport for many farmers in the Veneto and Ferrara regions,” said Raffaella Sanna, Councillor for Culture of the Municipality of Alghero, "A tradition these communities brought with them on their journey in search of a place they themselves helped make prosperous, where they could raise their sons and daughters. Alghero and Sardinia have indeed been a welcoming land, where these families have become an integral part and source of pride for our diverse community."
The bike ride, organized by the Fertilia Grandi Eventi Association in collaboration with the ASD Algherobike, will also benefit from the valuable support of the ASD BabboBike of Reggello, Tuscany, which will be present with a large group of athletes from across the Tyrrhenian Sea.
According to Raniero Selva, Councillor for the Environment of the Municipality of Alghero with responsibility for the suburbs, This is an extraordinary opportunity to showcase the beauty and traditions of our region, a priority for our administration, and especially Mayor Cacciotto, since the beginning of his term. Cyclists will cycle through some of our region's most prized areas, including farmland, vineyards, and enchanting beaches and coastlines, a great asset for Alghero..
May 31st will also be an extraordinary opportunity to promote the values of our region, which has always stood out for its ability to include and integrate diverse people. These values will be further enhanced by the presence of three-time Paralympic freediving world vice-champion Ottavio Demontis, who wanted to be present to testify to the value of sport and strengthen the spirit of inclusivity that characterized the founding of Fertilia.
At the end of the ride, which will start at 9:30 a.m. from Piazza San Marco, a big party is planned, featuring music and the presence of the Coldiretti Village, which will offer attendees our excellent agricultural and food products, prepared directly by local producers.
A day of celebration that is part of the Fertilia '90 program of events, designed to celebrate not only the City of Foundation but the entire Nurra Algherese area, which now more than ever can play a key role in the development of Alghero. We invite everyone to participate in this great celebration, hoping that Fertilia a Ruota Libera will become an annual event., the comment of Giuseppe Bellu, President of Fertilia Grandi Eventi, "Because we are convinced that sport can and should become a way to bring our community together and bring many young people back to experience Fertilia and our region in a healthy way, rebuilding that sense of humanity and community that had been lost over the years."
