The Risiera di San Sabba in Trieste was the only Nazi concentration camp in Italy equipped with a crematorium. It functioned as a "mixed" camp, that is, a collection center for the deportation of Jews to Auschwitz and other extermination camps. Therefore, it served primarily as a transit camp, but also as a detention and police camp for the imprisonment, torture, and elimination of Resistance fighters, captured partisans, and civilian hostages. For this latter purpose, the camp was also equipped with a crematorium for the incineration of the victims' bodies, obtained by converting the former grain drying facility.
