Ziliotto Tomb, Zara Cemetery

The Italian tombs in the Zadar cemetery

On April 13, before attending the inauguration ceremony of the "Girolamo Luxardo" Italian Community—or, more precisely, its installation in the spaces owned by the Italian Union within Palazzo Borelli, in the historic center of Zadar—the Italian Ambassador to Croatia, Paolo Trichilo, visited the city cemetery together with the Honorary President of the Association of Dalmatian Italians in the World and Zadar exile Antonio Concina.

Damira Tolić and Sofija Sorić, officials from the Zadar Section of the Institute for the Protection of Cultural Heritage, part of the Croatian Ministry of Culture and Media, explained the site's history. During the visit, the ambassador was introduced to the cemetery's history—which has been under protection for its architectural and historical value since 1973, a status confirmed in 2003, and in 2015, it was accepted into the Association of Significant Cemeteries in Europe (ASCE). The history was enriched with interesting facts and anecdotes related to the main monuments within it, including the remains of Trajan's aqueduct.

Trichilo was also informed of the relationship between the Madrinato Dalmatico and Nasadi, the Zadar municipal company that manages the city's cemeteries and green spaces, as well as the involvement of Italian restoration workshops and stonemasons in the recovery of the tombs.
