Ass Com Ist Conference Commission 1946

The Istrian Government and National Liberation Committee's commitment to the new eastern border

As part of the initiatives held in conjunction with Remembrance Day 2026, the Association of Istrian Communities held a round table discussion at its headquarters in Trieste, titled "The work carried out by the Italian government and the Istrian National Council to ensure that at least western Istria remains under Italian sovereignty."

Coordinated by the association's president, Giorgio Tessarolo, with the participation of historians Roberto Spazzali, Kristjan Knez, and Lorenzo Salimbeni, the initiative's starting point was the upcoming anniversary of the Inter-Allied Commission's visit to Venezia Giulia in March 1946, to assess the ethnic situation on the ground and establish a new Italian-Yugoslav border respectful of national identity. The border established by the Peace Treaty of February 10, 1947, primarily took into account political considerations and the balance of power between powers now entangled in the Cold War. Its first victim was the indigenous Italian population of the eastern Adriatic, 90% of whom opted to emigrate rather than live under the rule of Tito's communist Yugoslavia.
