Istria Raises the Curtain. Theatrical Stories of the Exodus [presentation]
There are stories that have remained silent for years, locked away in suitcases, memories, and absences. Stories of lands abandoned, of homes quickly emptied, of voices that crossed the sea, carrying with them pain, identity, and memory. The theater becomes the space where these voices can once again be heard.
Through narrative theater, Tiziana Sauco, a second-generation Istrian exile, with her book Istria Raises the Curtain. Theatrical Stories of the Exodus (Eclettica, Massa 2026) takes the reader on a profound journey into the history of the Istrian, Rijeka, and Dalmatian exodus.
The analysis of four plays—from “…Quell' enorme lapide bianca” by Paolo Logli and Luca Violini, to “La verità oltre la storia” by Romano Bosich, passing through “Mili muoi – l'esodo dei miei” by Carlo Colombo, and concluding with “Magazzino 18” by Simone Cristicchi and Jan Bernas—is intertwined with a personal and family bond, transforming the study into testimony.
At the initiative of the Hon. Nicole Matteoni, "Istria Raises the Curtain" was presented on Thursday, June 18, 2026, in the Press Office of the Chamber of Deputies.
Following official greetings from the Hon. Matteoni, the author was joined by Lorenzo Salimbeni (head of communications for the National Association of Venezia Giulia and Dalmatia), Luisa Trevisi (co-producer and distributor of the work "Mili muoi… L'esodo dei miei"), Carlo Colombo (author and performer of the work "Mili muoi… L'esodo dei miei"), Marino Micich (director of the Historical Archive Museum of Rijeka), publisher Alessandro Amorese, and Emanuele Merlino (historian and writer).
