The Madonna dell'Esilio altarpiece in the Giuliano-Dalmata district of Rome has been restored.
A major restoration project presented, curated, and implemented by the Rome Provincial Committee of the National Association of Venezia Giulia and Dalmatia and funded by Law 72/2001 has reached completion.
The project concerned the recovery and valorization of the altarpiece, representing the Our Lady of Exile, an oil painting by the Zadar-born painter Andrea Fossombrone, which was donated in 1950 by the Bracco family of Lussino to be placed in the parish church of San Marco Evangelista, in the Julian-Dalmatian Quarter of Rome. The necessary restoration has been fully completed, and on Monday, October 13, the altarpiece was officially unveiled inside the church of San Marco Evangelista in Agro Laurentino, in the heart of the Julian-Dalmatian Quarter of Rome, which already houses artistic works linked to the eastern Adriatic tradition that the Istrian, Fiume, and Dalmatian exiles who arrived in the capital in the immediate post-war period have preserved and passed on to new generations. The restored altarpiece thus further enriches the Widespread museum, a qualification that the District has now officially held for several years thanks to the synergy between the historic associations of the area and the collaboration with Rome Capital and the XI Municipio.
On the occasion of the installation and unveiling, a Holy Mass was held presided over by His Holiness Cardinal Baldo Réina, Vicar of His Holiness for the Diocese of Rome, in the presence of local, institutional, religious, civil, and military authorities, as well as representatives of the ANVGD of Rome and the associations present in the neighborhood. The Bracco family, who remain closely linked to the world of the Adriatic diaspora, was also present.
