Ugo Camozzo Bishop River

Bishop Camozzo and his "priests" return to Fiume

It is a return, an act of justice, the recognition of a long sacrifice, and a testament to the love of the people of Fiume for their city. The Association of Italians of Fiume in the World marks another step in its commitment to raising awareness of the work of Bishop Ugo Camozzo and his priests who went to Pisa with the exodus. Following the conference and exhibition in Tuscany and Veneto, and the pilgrimage of the faithful of the Diocese of Fiume to Pisa to stand before the Bishop's final resting place, in collaboration with the Italian Community, under the patronage of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers of the Italian Republic, on March 14 and 15, 2026, the Choir of the Musical Chapel of the Cathedral of Pisa directed by M.ro Riccardo Donati.

This long story finds a fitting conclusion: the last Italian bishop of Fiume, Msgr. Ugo Camozzo, after being forced to leave the diocese of Fiume in 1947 following the exodus and the city's passage to Yugoslavia, was assigned by the Vatican first to Venice and then appointed Archbishop of Pisa. In the years that followed, 26 priests from Fiume responded to his call, whom he had called to provide new parish priests for the dioceses of the war-torn area. Little is known about them, a few scattered pieces of information in the newspapers of Pisa and surrounding towns, yet enough to reconstruct a journey through their lives through the exhibition organized by AFIM, which will also be on display in Fiume. There was little fanfare during their priesthood; the notes are mostly collected in their obituaries, which reveal the great affection of the parishioners, who affectionately nicknamed them "pretich" for their surnames ending in "ch." But in Rijeka, it will be remembered above all that seventy-eight years later, in October 2025, the faithful of the Archdiocese of Rijeka visited the tomb of Archbishop Camozzo as part of the centenary celebrations of the Diocese of Rijeka, meeting with the current Archbishop of Pisa, Saverio Cannistrà.

Contact has been established and is strong, thanks in part to the presence in Pisa of the group's last priest, Severino Dianich, a renowned theologian. Now, the relationship between the Kvarner and Tuscan cities can continue in the name of faith and shared belonging to the city of Rijeka: this is what the concert by the Musical Chapel of Pisa Cathedral on March 14 and 15 intends to seal. On Saturday, March 14, at 16:30 p.m., a concert will be held at the Italian Community of Rijeka. conference hosted by Franco Papetti, Enea Dessardo e Marko Medved and it will be inaugurated show prepared by Rosanna Turcinovich for the Association of Italians from Fiume in the World on Archbishop Ugo Camozzo and the clergy of Fiume in Pisa. The distinguished theologian, originally from Fiume, will also be present at the event. Severino Dianich. Also on Saturday, at 19:00 pm the Musical Chapel of the Cathedral of Pisa will hold a sacred music concert at St. Vitus Cathedral.

"For AFIM," says President Franco Papetti, "this is a moment of great joy because we've reached another milestone in the cultural revival that has characterized our association's recent years. Faith, along with education, culture, and especially literature, are being developed to leave a mark where everything began. Fiume is a point of reference, an open-air museum, a place of ever-living memory to be passed on to posterity, especially to young people searching for an identity that is now recognized as an authentic and essential heritage of the individual."

On Sunday 15 March the Musical Chapel of the Cathedral of Pisa will also enliven the Mass in Italian at St. Vitus Cathedral starting at 9:30 am.

It will be a precious opportunity to rediscover a significant chapter in the history of Fiume and Pisa and to experience, through various events, a moment of encounter, remembrance, and cultural and spiritual sharing.
