What is Memory?
A moment of emotion that lasts the length of a day?
No. For us it is something much more important!
What happened in Istria, Fiume and Dalmatia is not just a page of history to remember, and to be remembered, on February 10th but which we then forget for the rest of the year.
The violence suffered by the foibati, the injustice of the exodus but also the dignity of love of country, the stories of greatness and redemption, which the Italians of the Eastern Adriatic have given us, deserve much more than a simple, even if dutiful, ceremony of a few people.
To ensure that it is a shared memory, the road is still long and there are many, too many, obstacles to face, including disinterest, superficiality and the shame of justificationists, reductionists and deniers always ready to spit out lies and shame.
But we are following this path and will follow it until the end.
Indeed. We build this road day by day also through an extraordinarily successful campaign of naming places after symbols of Remembrance. Norma Cossetto first and foremost.
This February 10th, then, let us remember and make others remember, but above all, let us insist that our municipalities inaugurate, if they don't already have them, streets, squares, parks, monuments, public places or even plaques and benches to the events of the foibe and the exodus.
Only in this way will the Memory become everyone's.
