It is late April 1945. On the 28th, in Dongo, Mussolini is killed by partisans. Even in the far north of Italy, the weapons are silent. Peace is approaching everywhere and with it the joy of newfound Freedom! Trieste is living a vigil full of anxious expectations. At dawn on April 30, 1945, it takes up arms against the Germans: these are now rear guards, although combative and unwilling to give in. The insurrection is led by Col. May 1, 1945: Trieste is ready to celebrate the end of a long and painful war. The day before, the Volunteers of Freedom, the men of the CLN led by Don Marzari, took control of the city, taking it away from the German troops (and the mediation of the Bishop Monsignor Santin also managed to save the port and other structures of the city). The war is therefore over and the people of Trieste are preparing to celebrate peace, as is increasingly done throughout Italy and in much of Europe.
