GdA in Fiume

Fiumanism between patriotism and revolutionary syndicalism

Ronchi dei Legionari is a place intimately linked to the history of the Risorgimento since 1882, when Guglielmo Oberdan was captured there and later hanged in Trieste for having planned to assassinate Emperor Franz Joseph of Habsburg. A short distance away is the imposing Redipuglia staircase, the largest military shrine in Italy, where lie the remains of around 100.000 fallen soldiers in the terrifying battles of the Isonzo fought by the then Royal Army against the Austro-Hungarian troops between June 1915 and October 1917. It was also from Ronchi that Gabriele d'Annunzio and his Legionaries set out on the evening of 11 September 1919, precisely...

2020 Anniversary of the Fiume Enterprise

As is tradition, this year too, the Fiume Section of the National League, in collaboration with the Municipality of Monfalcone and the Committee for the Historical and Literary Promotion of Gabriele D'Annunzio of Ronchi dei Legionari, will commemorate the Impetus of Fiume, a key milestone in the history of Fiume and Italy in the short century. The ceremony, adapting to the situation created by the ongoing pandemic, will take place, in a restricted format, at the San Polo monument in Monfalcone at 5:30 pm on Saturday, September 12, 2020, with the laying of laurel wreaths. Participants, in private, will, of course, observe all health and safety measures.

Marinetti's Fiume diary

Guido Andrea Pautasso (edited by), Diario Fiumano. Fillippo Tommaso Marinetti, Italia Storica, Genoa 2020, 152 pp. The Diario Fiumano by Filippo Tommaso Marinetti published here by the Associazione Italia Storica consists of the pages of the original Marinetti Notebooks from the period from 13 to 30 September 1919 and between 2 October 1919 and 3-5 September 1920, illustrating the departure for Fiume and the frenetic days spent there by Filippo Tommaso Marinetti and the Futurists, between enthusiastic proclamations to the Legionaries of Fiume, the electrifying atmosphere of the "City of Life" and his contrasting intellectual and human relationships with Gabriele D'Annunzio and the leading personalities of the...

The Fiume Question According to De Ambris

Alceste De Ambris, The Question of Fiume. The Forces and Forms of the City of Life, edited by Gennaro Malgeri, Idrovolante, Rome 2019, 140 pp. The turning point in the Fiume affair occurred on 10 January 1920, when Gabriele d'Annunzio accepted the resignation of Giovanni Giuriati as Head of the Command Cabinet, appointing Alceste De Ambris in his place. Giuriati was willing to accept the compromise suggested by the Italian government. De Ambris, on the other hand, represented the revolutionary (and extremist) soul of Fiumanism. With the appointment of Alceste De Ambris, the heroic period of Fiume began, which, from that moment on, became the destination of a massive migration of soldiers and...

The comic “River or Death”

RIVER OR DEATH THE EPIC ENTERPRISE OF D'ANNUNZIO AND HIS MEN The most original, long, faithful, adventurous, heroic, ironic and entertaining visual story of the legendary Fiume enterprise of Gabriele d'Annunzio and his legionaries. A century later, we return to savor the pioneering spirit, the jovial atmosphere and the heroic tensions in the masterpiece conceived by Carlo Sicuro, written by Manlio Bonati and illustrated by Yildirim Örer and Mauro Vecchi. Over 140 pages of pure, bold, brazen, exciting Italianness: from the preamble to the Great War with the legendary flight over Vienna in 1918 to the mutilated Victory, from the march to conquer the city of Fiume...

D'Annunzio in Trieste and Fiume

Following the events of September 12th “D'Annunzio in Trieste and Fiume” the Society of Fiume Studies considers these actions, beyond the more or less justifying declarations, to be profoundly wrong and damaging. Some actions organized in Italy (in Trieste) and Fiume on the occasion of the anniversary of d'Annunzio's Fiume Enterprise had media coverage and diplomatic repercussions. We limit ourselves to those promoted by some Italian citizens in the city of Kvarner. On the morning of September 12th a large Italian flag was hung on the railing of the Government Palace in Fiume and seven young people had their pictures taken with the flag at the...

Letter to Marcello Veneziani

Dear Marcello Veneziani, I am writing to you after reading, along with many of us, your beautiful piece of the 13th of this month in La Verità entitled “And the lost Italy was found in Fiume”. As you know, the world of the Julian-Dalmatian Exodus brings together a people; many people distributed throughout Italy and the world who were forced to abandon their possessions and effects to safeguard their Italian identity and, with it, their freedom. This part of the Italian people is not dead at all, but alive and generative, and continues its work of testimony and patient mending with the land of origin, with the native Italian communities of Slovenia and Croatia and, even, with the governments of those...

Fiume, September 12, 1919-2019

D'Annunzio's Fiume Enterprise and the Complexity of the History of the Istrian, Fiuman and Dalmatian People Today The Associations of Istrian, Fiuman and Dalmatian Exiles, in the long years from the post-war period to today, have been able to bear witness to the human events of the Julian-Dalmatian Exodus and the persecution of the native Italian-speaking populations of the eastern Adriatic. This testimony has always been full of tenacity, passion and tension towards an ideal of Memory capable of actively contributing to a positive ethic in society. In this action perpetrated in the name of truth, the Associations of Exiles have been able to build...

Istrian Communities Reject Attempts at Provocation in Rijeka

The Istrian Communities in the sign of the new European cohesion reject the attempts of provocation in Fiume. The Association of Istrian Communities expresses regret and surprise for the actions promoted by groups of Italian citizens in Fiume - today Rijeka - aimed at stirring up political and diplomatic tensions on the eastern border on the occasion of the centenary of the entry into Fiume of Gabriele d'Annunzio at the head of his legionaries on 12 September 1919. The Istrian Communities recall that the world of the diaspora of Istrian-Fiuman and Dalmatian exiles has always remembered in its historical framework the events of Fiume, which are part of the History of Italy and Europe. They trust that the nature...

Protecting the history of Italianness in Fiume without provocation

The National Association of Venezia Giulia and Dalmatia dissociates itself from the provocative and unofficially agreed upon initiatives that characterized the centenary of Gabriele d'Annunzio's entry into Fiume at the head of his legionaries on 12 September 1919. The ANVGD remembers and celebrates this anniversary through conferences, publications and institutional initiatives, thus commemorating the Italian nature of the city of Fiume, as expressed by the declaration of annexation to Italy pronounced by the National City Council on 30 October 1918 and which D'Annunzio's action intended to materialize until the tragic epilogue of the Bloody Christmas....
