Commemoration of the 110th anniversary of the death of Nazario Sauro
I die with the sole regret of depriving my dearest and most kind children of their beloved father, but you still have the Fatherland, which will take my place. And by this Fatherland, swear, Nino, and make your brothers swear, when they are old enough to understand, that you will always, everywhere, and above all be Italians. Only a few days remain before the Kingdom of Italy declares war on the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and the irredentist Nazario Sauro, born in Koper on September 20, 1880, who took refuge in Venice when the First World War broke out to avoid having to fight in the Habsburg army, has given his journalist friend Silvio Stringari a letter addressed to his firstborn...

105 years ago the martyrdom of Nazario Sauro
September 20, 1880 marked the tenth anniversary of the Breach of Porta Pia, through which the troops of the Kingdom of Italy had conquered Rome, putting an end to the temporal power of the Popes and enriching the path of the Risorgimento with the conquest of what was to be the capital of a united Italy. However, at the time, lands where the majority of the population spoke, felt and had Italian culture were still under the domination of the Austro-Hungarian Empire: Trentino, Venezia Giulia (including Trieste, Gorizia and Istria), Fiume and the cities of the Dalmatian coast. Committed Italian patriots and intellectuals called those lands “unredeemed”,...
Commemoration of Nazario Sauro, martyr of Istrian Italianity
In Trieste, the August heat at the peaceful crossroads of the eastern border pushes every man of any kind to seek a bit of coolness; both in the city and in the suburbs you can breathe the torrid air of the great divisions of the 900th century. And yet, despite everyone seeking shade under the imperturbable effigies that populate the squares, there is no trace of a breeze except in that popular culture that links the city to a much more disruptive wind: the bora. In Piazzale Marinai d'Italia, reachable by following the main road that leads from the central station to the old Campo Marzio station, there is a bronze figure, that of Nazario Sauro, whose dress is...
