Issue 437 of January 16, 2022 of "La Nuova Voce Giuliana", the newspaper of the Association of Istrian Communities, contains a broad and detailed excursus on the history of the eastern border by Flavio Fiorentin, born in Verteneglio and exiled from Fiume, former director of the autonomous region of Friuli Venezia Giulia and passionate history scholar. Of particular value is his book "L'eredità del leone. Dal Trattato di Campoformio (1797) alla Prima Guerra Mondiale (1918)" (Aviani & Aviani, Udine 2018). The people of the Julian-Dalmatian exodus commemorate Gigante and Diana

The ark of the Vittoriale degli Italiani that Gabriele d'Annunzio wanted to dedicate to Senator Riccardo Gigante, an irredentist from Fiume who was among the closest collaborators of the Poet during the Italian Regency of Carnaro, will no longer remain empty. The investigations of the Carabinieri have ascertained that among the human remains found in the mass grave of Castua, near Fiume, thanks to the research carried out by the Society of Fiumani Studies and exhumed last year, there are also those of Gigante and of the vice-brigadier of the Carabinieri Alberto Diana. Both found death as soon as the capital of Carnaro was occupied by the partisan army of Josip Broz "Tito" on May 3, 1945....
