The “bill” of September 8 was paid at the eastern borders
September 8 as the day of Italy's redemption in the Second World War. September 8 as the beginning of the Resistance and the fight against Nazi-fascism on a larger scale. The usual ceremonies have insisted on these aspects, but for the Italians of the eastern border this date is well represented by the title of the famous essay by Ernesto Galli Della Loggia «The Death of the Fatherland». A Fatherland that entered into agony in the retreats in Russia and North Africa, in the war of attrition in the Balkans and in the collapse of the fascist regime. A Fatherland idealized and exalted in the unredeemed lands until the moment it materialized in November 1918, presenting itself in the austere clothes...
It happened in Split, a hundred years ago
by Piero Cordignano - 26/07/2020 - Source: Il Corriere della Sera One hundred years ago in Split, the captain of a ship and his engineer were killed. Gabriele d'Annunzio later wanted the bow of the Royal Ship Puglia in the garden of the Vittoriale to commemorate this event. No one, 100 years later, has remembered it, however, in Italy, or at least almost no one, except me and the constitutionalist Prof. Giuseppe de Vergottini who, together with a few others, went to lay a wreath on the bust of Commander Gulli at the Pincio in Rome. Despite various requests, not even the Navy deemed it appropriate to pay homage to the two fallen. Who were also at the root of everything that happened...
July 11, 1920 the Split incident
These days many articles are dedicated to the burning of the Balkan in Trieste on July 13, 1920, but rarely is reference made to the killing of Tommaso Gulli, commander of the Royal Ship Puglia and Gold Medal for Military Valor, and the engineer Aldo Rossi, Silver Medal for Military Valor, in Split on the evening of the previous July 11. The arrival of this news in the Julian capital, where the Austro-Hungarian policies of divide and conquer, developed by the authorities in Vienna in the last decades of the Habsburg monarchy, had exacerbated opposing nationalisms, had given rise to a series of demonstrations that culminated in the shooting that took place on the Balkan. To this...

SOS for Diocletian's Palace in Split
Underground to consolidate, interventions also needed on the walls. The Municipality: «We don't have money for restoration» by Andrea Marsanich - March 13, 2018 SPLIT. From a touristic point of view, Split is the strongest of the large cities in Croatia, with thousands of vacationers who flock every day in the high season to the historic center, the one surrounded by the walls of Diocletian's palace, built 1.700 years ago. They are tourists attracted by thousands of years of history, by monuments, palaces, towers and bastions. A heritage that unfortunately does not receive the care it needs, and that causes risks and dangers for vacationers and residents themselves. Already a couple of months ago the director...
