Referendum Ballot Paper June 2, 1946

On June 2, 46, the people of Giulianova, Fiume and Zadar were unable to vote.

Of the 573 seats of the Constituent Assembly to be assigned and provided for by the Legislative Decree of the Lieutenant n. 74 of 10 March 1946, in reality only 556 were assigned, the 13 foreseen for the XII District (Trieste and Venezia Giulia – Zara) being missing, in addition to the 5 of the province of Bolzano. With a further Decree of the Lieutenant, only six days later, it was deemed impossible to hold elections in those border lands, due to the international situation. The founding moment of the Italian State emerging from the rubble of the conflict therefore took place without involving the citizens residing in lands that, until the deliberations...

May 1, 1945 The foibe… a nightmare

May 1, 1945: Trieste is ready to celebrate the end of a long and painful war. The day before, the Volunteers of Freedom, the men of the CLN led by Don Marzari, took control of the city, taking it away from the German troops (and the mediation of the Bishop Monsignor Santin also managed to save the port and other structures of the city). The war is therefore over and the people of Trieste are preparing to celebrate peace, as is increasingly done throughout Italy and in much of Europe. But the reality they discover, that morning of May 1, is completely different. The new arrivals, the Yugoslavian communist troops of Marshal Tito, are not bearers of peace, they are...

April 25th was not a liberation for all Italians

On the day the Northern Italy National Liberation Committee unleashed the insurrection in Milan and in the other main cities now abandoned by the retreating Germans, in the far north-east the situation was very different. The Anglo-American troops were far from Venezia Giulia because, once the Gothic Line had been broken through, the priority was to reach the Brenner Pass and from there quickly get to Bavaria, where it was feared that the last desperate German resistance would be concentrated. Instead, the People's Liberation Army of Yugoslavia was marching at forced marches, more interested in reaching Trieste, Gorizia, Pola and Fiume than in regaining control of cities...

The Birth of the Armenian Community of Trieste

April 24, 1915 marked the beginning of the extermination of the Armenian community living within the Ottoman Empire: there had already been persecutions and oppression by the Young Turk Government, but during the First World War, a massacre of one and a half million people took place. Even before this catastrophe, the Armenian diaspora had spread throughout the world and Trieste, after the establishment of the Free Port in 1719, also welcomed an Armenian community that contributed to the development of the city. The birth of the Armenian community of Trieste: a difficult beginning (1770-1810) The growth of Trieste in the central years of the eighteenth century,...

Santin defensor civitatis of Trieste

The Piccolo was founded in Trieste to keep alive the feelings of Italian culture in the context of the Austro-Hungarian Empire with a liberal orientation. At the time, the government of the diocese of Trieste was governed by ecclesiastics proposed to the Pope by the Emperor, such as Bishops Monsignor Legat, Glavina, Nagl and Karlin. When the Empire fell in 1918 and Italy arrived, Karlin asked to be transferred from Italian territory and was then appointed Bishop of Maribor. The first Bishop of Trieste and Capodistria under the Italian Government was the Piedmontese Angelo Bartolomasi, already a military Bishop, who opted for the diocese of Pinerolo and left the Chair to Monsignor Luigi Fogar, secretary...
