The Rossetti So Far Away Land

“Tanto lontana terra” a musical painting dedicated to the Exodus

“Tanto Lontana Terra” is a dramatic musical composition consisting of 16 pieces in which the alternation between spoken and sung voice is punctuated by silences and bursts of sound performed by a string quartet (two violins, viola and cello) and the piano.

The composition by Trieste-born Maestro Marco Podda—a musician, conductor, and composer with an international career—was successfully premiered in 2023.

At the Teatro Stabile del Friuli Venezia Giulia, the performance of "Tanto lontana terra" represents a poetic and moving way to keep alive the memory of the exodus on Remembrance Day and reflect on the theme of overcoming borders, which is also fundamental to envisioning the future.

In the textual component—which will be performed by Paolo Valerio—historical pieces alternate with poems and narrative-poetic pieces on the theme of borders and humanity fractured and divided by geographical and psychological boundaries. The singing dimension will benefit from the beautiful voice of mezzo-soprano Giulia Diomede. The musical structure is composed of metalinguistic segments for the recitatives and closed forms, identified in the dramatic development, that crystallize the emotional phenomenon. Fragments of folk melodies from Dalmatia, Istria, and Rijeka disintegrate within the harmonic fragments present in the soundscape, almost recognizable and certainly dreamlike, or rather, residual nightmares.

"Acoustic tears," writes Maestro Podda, "which, from the humus of pain and nostalgic sadness, make new musical roots of future life sprout."
