"26 October: A Sea of Umbrellas" returns to the stage
Staged for the first time to coincide with the celebrations for the 70th anniversary of Italy's return to Trieste (26 October 1954-2024) and broadcast on Rai as a radio drama, the Teatro Stabile del Friuli Venezia Giulia, in collaboration with Rai Friuli Venezia Giulia, is presenting "26 ottobre Un mare di ombrelli," a play written by Gianni Gori, again from 16 to 25 January in the Sala Bartoli.
Inspired by the centenary of radio on the one hand, and the anniversary of Trieste's reunification with Italy on the other, the play recounts October 26, 1954, through a dual aspect: radio and theater. Written as a radio play, it was broadcast as such, directed by Mario Mirasola. But it also "happens" on stage at the Sala Bartoli, where the theatrical version curated by Paolo Valerio provides a behind-the-scenes look at radio drama and allows audiences to discover the secrets behind the genre's production, in an interesting "cross-pollination."
The excellent performers bring to life the memories and feelings of three different generations facing an important event, awaited for nine years. A teacher (a Trieste native by adoption), his wife (a chorister at the Teatro Verdi), a son and daughter who are students approaching adulthood, and a widowed father-in-law who also lived (in the uniform of the Kuk) through the "long night" of the First World War—these are the four main voices that exchange the narrative thread, four of the "numerous" characters who appear one after the other in the radio drama's sequences.
“A sea of umbrellas” is the symbolic image of the city which, on that “special day” lashed by freezing rain, pours and floods towards the shores, driven by an uncontrollable emotion.
