Three peoples remember the martyrdom of Don Bonifacio
Istria is preparing to celebrate an anniversary of profound historical, religious, and civic significance. Eighty years after the martyrdom of Blessed Don Francesco Bonifacio, a priest born and raised in this border region, Krassiza returns to the center of a memorial journey involving the entire Istrian peninsula and communities in Italy, Slovenia, and Croatia. Some of the most significant moments of the celebrations promoted by the Diocese of Trieste will take place in the very town where the young parish priest exercised his ministry and from which, on September 11, 1946, he left on his final journey, never to return.
From solemn liturgies to pilgrimages to the sites of his martyrdom, to the dedication of the restored rectory and renewed research into his burial site, the anniversary represents an opportunity to rediscover a figure who continues to unite the peoples of Istria in the spirit of faith, reconciliation, and the search for historical truth.
The Diocese of Trieste has presented a detailed calendar of events dedicated to the important anniversary, accompanied by an update on the research regarding the burial site of the mortal remains of the Istrian priest, who died in September 1946 and was proclaimed blessed for his martyrdom "in odium fidei."
