A warning to Italy from Trieste

In 1914, on the eve of the entry of the Kingdom of Italy into the war, the irredentist from Trieste Ruggero Timeus published a book, entitled Trieste.

With this work he accuses the attempt to denationalize the Italian-speaking territories of the Habsburg Empire by the imperial government itself. The book, of disconcerting topicality, will historically create a definitive split, long foreseen, with the cultural irredentism of Scipio Slataper and Giani Stuparich. The figure of the young intellectual from Trieste, who will die in September 1915 hit by an Austrian grenade, has been defined uncomfortable. This happened because he denounced, in a vehement manner, the lack of reaction, on the part of the Habsburg Italian speakers, to the continuous and growing settlements of foreigners (Slavic speakers). These would have determined the gradual, as well as inexorable, disappearance (through absorption) of the Italic ethnicity.

A few years later, in 1920 to be precise, after the end of the world conflict, another irredentist from Trieste, Prof. Attilio Tamaro, wrote a new book of denunciation. Having survived the horrors of war, he saw the need for a form of State that would ensure social equity and protection for citizens, not sparing sharp criticism of communism.

A warning to contemporary Italy from Habsburg Trieste, after an exhaustive historical and political analysis, traces parallels, taking up the lesson of Ruggero Timeus, between contemporary Italy and the Italian-speaking regions of the Habsburg Empire.

From the Author's preface: I wrote this book as a warning to my fellow countrymen: what you are about to experience has, in some ways, already happened, albeit with different historical connotations, in Venezia Giulia. I wrote this book because I am Italian and I don't want the new and young generations to be denationalized.
