Uto Ughi and Ernesto Galli Della Loggia inaugurate La Bancarella 2017

Back to Trieste, curated by the Multimedia Documentation Centre for Julian, Istrian, Rijeka, Dalmatian Culture and in co-organization with the Municipality of Trieste and the National Association of Venezia Giulia and Dalmatia, La Bancarella. Eastern Adriatic Book Fair, a cultural event born in 2006 and which this year will have an extraordinary format.

«Compared to previous editions – he explains Renzo Codarin, president of the CDM – we will not concentrate all the activities in a single weekend, but we will carry out a series of in-depth studies until the Day of Remembrance 2018 on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the Paris Peace Treaty of 10 February 1947 (which came into force on the following 15 September) which so heavily affected the eastern Italian border and marked a fundamental stage in the exodus of 350.000 Istrians, Fiume and Dalmatians. Trieste became the moral capital of that Exodus and therefore today it is important to carry out this series of cultural meetings in the Julian capital».

The event will be inaugurated with two exceptional events: on Saturday 28 October at 20 pm at the Teatro Verdi the Concert for the Martyrs of the Foibe and the Julian-Dalmatian Exiles of the Master Uto Ughi, whose prestigious violin will be accompanied by Maestro Bruno Canino on the piano; the following day, Sunday 29 October, at 11:00 am at the Ridotto del Verdi, Prof. Ernesto Galli of the Lodge will hold a conference on the topic The Homeland and the Eastern Border.

"Music is certainly an instrument that goes beyond divisions and aims straight at the soul and hearts of people, trying to soothe even the most pain-wounded hearts" says Maestro Ughi, of Istrian origins, as his father came from Piran, the place that also gave birth to the great eighteenth-century musician. Giuseppe Tartini, a statue of which still stands in the main town square. Tartini himself with his “Devil's Trill” will be the focus of the concert (organized in collaboration with the Cultural Association Arturo Toscanini of Savigliano), whose set list also includes pieces by Brahms, Dvořák, Wieniavsky and de Sarasate. This show has already been performed in Treviso and in 2015, on the occasion of the institutional ceremony of the Day of Remembrance, the Maestro played at the Senate of the Republic in memory of the victims of the foibe: advance sales are available at the theater box office, but also by calling the toll-free number 800898868.

In the following meeting (free admission until all seats are taken), Galli Della Loggia, professor emeritus of Contemporary History and author of the famous essay «The Death of the Fatherland», will analyze Italy's relationship with Venezia Giulia, Carnaro and Dalmatia starting from the Risorgimento, to reach the First World War, passing through Irredentism, but will also focus on what concepts and ideals such as Homeland, nation and anti-fascism meant in these lands in the final phase of the Second World War and what their current declination may be, with particular reference to the perspective of those who were born in the tormented border lands or have their roots in them.

This prestigious pairing of events will mark the beginning of the cultural events of the Bancarella, which will continue at the Sala Bazlen of Palazzo Gopcevich (via Rossini, 4), with book presentations, round tables and conferences staggered between November and February: among the guests who will alternate, the famous and renowned chef of Istrian origins is also expected Joe Bastianich. It will begin on Saturday 11 November at 17:30 pm with the presentation of the book “Alida Valli from Pola to Hollywood and beyond” and the round table “Nazario Sauro and cinema”, curated by Alessandro Cuk (Alcione, Treviso 2016); on Saturday 18 November at 17:30 pm there will be a review of the editorial and historiographical news regarding the eastern Italian border, curated by Professor Adriana Ivanov Danieli; on Monday 27 November at 17:30 pm but at the Sala Tergeste of the Hotel Savoy Excelsior (Riva del Mandracchio, 4) the Vice President of the Senate Maurizio Gasparri will discuss with historians and journalists the topic “The Italian Republic and the Eastern Border”; finally, on Saturday 2 December, at 17:30 pm, the presentation of Lorenzo Salimbeni’s book “Sul ciglio della foiba. Storie e vicende dell’italianità” (Pagine, Rome 2016) will take place. With the beginning of the new year, the activities promoted by the Julian-Dalmatian diaspora and patriotic associations will take place, who have accepted the invitation of the Multimedia Documentation Centre to contribute to the creation of this broad range of historical and cultural insights.
