Venezia Giulia and Dalmatia, from memory to history

The Marciana National Library organizes, in the month of February 2016On the occasion ofDay of Remembrance of the Julian exodus, a series of three conferences entitled: “Venezia Giulia and Dalmatia, from memory to history”. The two regions of Venezia Giulia – that is, the Gorizia area, the Trieste area, Istria and the city of Fiume at the eastern end of the Alpine arc – and Dalmatia, that is, the coastal region of the eastern Adriatic that extends between the sea and the mountains behind it, from the Gulf of Quarnaro to the Bocche di Cattaro – combine the richness and complexity of the border regions between different geographical, ethnic and cultural worlds. Since the classical age, they were part of the Italian political and cultural area or related to it; in the diversity of their respective events, they always gravitated towards the wider area of the Adriatic and the Mediterranean until the Second World War, which profoundly changed their role and face. This series of three meetings intends to recall their history in an Adriatic, unitary and long-term perspective, with a general introduction and two in-depth studies on the Venetian and Habsburg periods..  It is part of the commemorations of the "Day of Remembrance of the Victims of the Foibe, of the Julian-Dalmatian Exodus, of the Events on the Eastern Border", a national Italian civil solemnity established by Law 30 March 2004 n. 92 and commemorated on 10 February.. The meetings, with free admission until all available seats are taken, will take place in the Vestibule of the Libreria Sansoviniana (Piazzetta San Marco 13/a, Venice).
